Beryllium Copper Alloy C17200 Details
Beryllium Copper C17200 (CuBe2) is one of the highest strength systems within the family of copper based alloys, approaching the properties of many of the highly alloyed nickel based and high strength stainless steels.
The strength comes from a mechanism known as age hardening or precipitation hardening. This process arises from the precipitation of a beryllium, containing phase from a super saturated solid solution of almost pure copper. This phase known as gamma prime typically comes out of solution at temperatures between 390-750ºF (200-400 ºc) and strengthens the copper rich alpha matrix.
Beryllium Copper has other important assets other than high strength, which include non-magnetic, non-sparking and excellent fatigue properties. In addition, it has very good bearing and anti-galling characteristics even under poor lubrication, as well as good conductivity and the ability to maintain mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures.
This combination of unique qualities has enabled Beryllium Copper to be used in numerous critical applications across the whole spectrum of industry. This ranges from non-sparking safety tools, components in ultra low temperature cryogenic equipment, aerospace bushings and bearings and professional quality percussion instruments.
It is also widely used in the electronics industry, where the combination of high electrical, thermal conductivities and fatigue strength makes it ideal for contacts, springs and miniature electronic components.
Beryllium copper has good resistance to seawater corrosion, most organic solutions, non-oxidizing acids and dilute alkalis. It is also resistant to hydrogen embitterment and resists stress corrosion cracking in sulphide and chloride solutions.
Alloy C17200 also meets the requirement of NACE MRO175.
The alloy is not recommended in ammonia or mercury containing environments or strongly oxidizing acids.
In the solid form Beryllium Copper creates few health problems but strict precautions should be taken against the inhalation of dust.
